Speed Skating
Although Prince George does not have the same population as urban centres such as Vancouver and Victoria, we still produce more than our fair share of elite athletes. The local speed skating community is on the rise, and their big dreams are paying off at every level of the sport, from regional right up to national.
As with all the winter sports in Prince George, a supportive community has helped to build some wonderful facilities, and even greater improvements in the near future. The CN Centre [link] is a world-class training and event holding venue for short-track speed skating. The olympic sized ice surface is surrounded by 6,000 seats, concessions, spacious dressing rooms, conference rooms with internet and phone access as well as ample storage space. For the long track skaters, plans are in the work to upgrade the current natural ice outdoor oval to a refrigerated outdoor oval [link] providing quality ice from October to March with a 4000 sq ft building housing training equipment, storage rooms, concession, meeting rooms and a viewing area. Construction would begin in 2006.
Of course these first class facilities would mean nothing if they didn't contain the very best ice. Prince George has been blessed with natural temperature and climate conditions designed for some of the best ice on earth. Fast and consistent ice; our trademark and perhaps the best reason to make Prince George your 2010 training ground.
