Cross Country Skiing

Otway Nordic Centre

As with hockey and curling, cross country skiing has a rich history in Northern B.C., especially in the City of Prince George.

The first cross country ski club was founded in 1957 and has grown tremendously.  Membership has steadily increased over the years, making cross country skiing one of the popular winter activities in our community. The Otway Nordic Centre [link] was opened in 1985, with 4.0 km of trails in total, with 1.5 km of those lit for night skiing. The club and centre flourished over the next 20 years, hosting a Canada Cup in 1987, the Canadian Junior Nationals in 1991, the Canadian National Championships in 2005 and the BC Championships for Nordic Skiing in 2006.

The trail system has expanded along with the membership: 30 km of homologated trails with 5 km of lighted trials, and 2 groomers to keep all the trails in world class condition. The lodge has expanded too; a 3368 sq ft. expansion in 2005 brought the total lodge space to 4768 sq ft. The lodge has change rooms, heated washrooms with running water, a lounge, concession, waxing room along with Internet and telephone capabilities.

The Otway Nordic Centre sets a standard for cross-country skiing. Only minutes from the downtown core, Otway offers some of the finest ski conditions and trails available in BC, and the lodge amenities to take all the difficulties out of training and allow the athletes to focus on what they do best.
