Otway Nordic Ski Centre

Established in 1985, the Otway Nordic Centre has blossomed from its original 5 km of trails to an impressive 30 km of homologated trails. Otway offers numerous challenging trails, with elite competition loops of 2.5, 3.5, 5, and 7.5 km long. These trails have been home to numerous high level events, from regional and club races to Provincial Championships, the Canadian Junior Nationals, and most recently, the BC Championships for Nordic Skiing. As an added bonus, 5 km of lit trails can allow training at any time of the day, so athletes are not limited by daylight in the shorter days of winter.

Although the trail system alone is impressive, the Centre has much more to offer. Two groomers keep all the trails in world class shape for both classic and skate technique in the winter, and the dedicated members of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club groom and trim the trails during the summer months so the trails are always ready to go early in the season. Indeed the ski season in Prince George is a long one, at a minimum December through March, although snow in November and April is common.

Along with the great trails and the pure snow the Central Interior is renowned for, Otway offers many amenities that make it the ideal venue for training. Although the Nordic Centre is only 10 minutes from the city centre, skiers quickly lose themselves in the beautiful pine, spruce and deciduous trees of Northern BC. Few facilities can offer the same solitude and serenity, and yet still be in such a convenient location.

The new lodge enhances every visitor's experience. With a lounge, running water, washrooms, storage, conference and waxing rooms, 4768 sq ft. lodge will provide ample room for any team. Perhaps best of all, internet and phone access can be provided directly at the lodge, so athletes and coaches can stay on-line and in touch in one location.

For the biathletes, the range will continue to impress, providing the same quality one would expect from a first rate facility. Currently the range has 15 shooting lanes and its own cabin, however plans for expansion are in the works and the already ideal range can only improve.

The Otway Nordic Centre is quickly becoming a premiere destination for cross country enthusiasts and elite athletes. With strong ties to the Northern Sports Centre and UNBC, elite athletes can pursue both education and their sport at a high level, taking advantage of all Prince George's amenities, including our northern hospitality.
