Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre

Established in 1990, the University of Northern British Columbia has steadily moved up the ranks of Canadian Universities, becoming an example to the rest of the country in development. Enrollment numbers are up and with a new education program and medical program affiliation, UNBC has made all the rights steps to become one of the finest educational institutions in the province.
With great institutions comes great facilities, and Prince George realized that our city was desperately in need of its own first class sport centre. With the announcement of Vancouver as host of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games there seemed no better time to leap into action and develop our own legacy from the games.
Partnerships were forged and City of Prince George, Spirit of BC, Pacific Sport and UNBC began developing a plan for the Northern Sport Centre. Two years later and designs are nearly finished and construction set to begin. The Northern Sport Centre is slated for completion by 2007, a year of accomplishment for UNBC, the City of Prince George and all of its citizens.
Through consultation with local sport groups, provincial and national sport organizations and educational organizations, the Steering Committee has developed a plan for the NSC that can accommodate a myriad of sports but doing so at a high level so elite athletes can take maximum advantage of the new facilities.
The Sport Centre will contain a large multi-use field that will be the perfect venue for the growing sport of indoor, a 4 lane 200 metre track and a 6 lane 80-metre straightaway for sprints, an arena space that will house 2,000 spectator seats surrounding 2 basketball courts, a high performance weight room, dressing rooms, lockers, office space for coaches and athlete services plus the Nordic Centre for Excellence.
The Nordic Centre for Excellence will solidify Prince George as a premiere training centre for biathlon and cross-country skiing. Athletes will be able to seek a high level of both education and skill in their respective sports without ever leaving the University campus.
